I am excited to announce our appointment as National Importer for Gomez Cruzado.*

This iconic estate, established in 1886 and located in El Barrio de la Estación de Haro, has revived and built upon its legacy in recent years, earning it the respect of critics in Spain and throughout Europe. Having recently tasted several vintages and across the range of wines they make, I was amazed at how one property could capture and bottle Rioja’s soulful tradition as perfectly as its exciting terroir-focused future. So, when they expressed interest in joining Indigo Wine/Eric Solomon Selections, I was honored to accept this rare opportunity.

Just last week, Luis Gutiérrez published his review for Rioja, remarking of Gomez Cruzado, “I tasted a stunning collection of wines from 2021.” This only confirms and rightfully recognizes Gomez Cruzado’s commitment to their legacy and the discovery of Rioja’s long-hidden site-specific wines.

Have you ever seen soils as black as these? They’re often said to look like Mars and are proof that not all dark depressions are a bad thing. The intensely black soils of Puro Rofe, located on the easternmost Canary Island of Lanzarote, are shaped by a remarkable geological history.
The island receives only six inches of rainfall annually and persistent winds from the Sahara, creating a challenging environment for viticulture. However, the volcanic eruptions of the 18th century, covering vast areas of the island with ash and lapilli, have given rise to a unique vine-growing method known as hoyos. These hand-dug depressions, sometimes reaching depths of two meters, provide access to moisture deep within the volcanic topsoil while shielding the vines from the relentless winds, resulting in a landscape characterized by craters, both natural and human-made.

Apple season is in full swing, and we can’t think of anything better to enjoy during crisp evenings then the ciders of Maison Herout. Normandy has a reputation as the land of apple excellence, and Maison Herout has been there since 1946. For generations, the transformation of apples into cider and Calvados has been cultural, rooted in the Cotentin region and producing some of the driest and most complex ciders made anywhere in France. Most wouldn’t expect it would perfectly pair with seafood, but that’s exactly what we decided to do on this crisp Saturday afternoon. Chin chin!

Bonbonnes, Demi-johns, or Damajuanas – call them what you will, their history is a testament to centuries of craftsmanship and winemaking. Dating back to the early 17th century France, these glass vessels were initially created to store and transport various liquids, with a primary focus on wines. Handcrafted by skilled glassblowers, each demijohn was a unique piece of artistry and allowed winemakers to age and preserve their wines, ensuring they reached the peak of their flavor profiles. The tradition of using French demijohns has not only endured but also spread worldwide. Their history is a testament to their enduring legacy in the world of wine, showcasing the intersection of art, science, and tradition. We’d take one of these over a decorative glass pumpkin any day.

Calatayud is a fairly innocuous and rural region of Spain. As far as the eye can see the hills and plains are blanketed by a patchwork of head-pruned Garnacha vineyards, blue skies, olive and cherry orchards, and fields of grain. Even more interesting is that the soil here is pure schist, the same soil one can find in the Priorat. This unique terroir and the old vines of Garnacha rooted in it, are the origins of Evodia.
