Overview

While not officially recognized by the DO, Escanyavella has been grown in the Priorat for centuries. Its origins and ancestry remain a mystery.  The few vines that still exist are usually blended with other white varieties but Marc Ripoll makes a single varietal Escanyavella from old vines planted near Gratallops. Fermented partly in stainless steel with the remainder in open-top wooden vats the wines is aged for seven months in neutral french oak for 4 months, then in tank for another 4 months before bottling.
